Today Dianne took an afternoon of rest while Martha joined her brother and sister-in-law (and 5 bus loads of Viking passengers!) on a trip to tour the Melk Abbey. Built between 1702 and 1736 as a royal palace, it was given to the Benedictine monks in the 11th century, who turned it into a fortified abbey. What interested me the most was the library. With around 8,000 medieval manuscripts, it was a marvel to see. Alas, no photography inside the Abbey was allowed. I’ll have to find some photos online. Here is a preview of what we saw:
