Waiting in Munich

We made it to Munich, without too much trouble. But, eleven hours is too long! Now we wait six hours at Munich International. Here are some photos of the flight over: https://photos.app.goo.gl/6W8WdX6Zc9SWfezV6

Crossing over Canada

It's amazing how technology works for us. For instance, my iPhone automatically adjusted for the time change, and let me know we're over Regina. I don't even know where that is, but I will tomorrow when my WiFi or Bluetooth turn on again. I carry the world in my pocket. My father carried a 20-30 (!) lb. briefcase, stuffed to the brim but all I need, for a similar effect, is a 3x5 (?) phone weighing 12 oz. (?). Again, facts I can verify when we land.

However, I need to adapt to my technology tools! Why didn't I bother to download some YouTube videos, or podcasts? I just assumed they're be there when I needed them! I used to travel with an iPod, which was alway full of audio and video. I failed to adjust. And who knew I would need so many USB connectors! My iPhone 12 and USC-C connectors don't cut it.

And when did airline seats get so narrow? And rigid - no lifting the arm rest to get out or sit closer! We're moving the wrong way, away from fitting people's needs to maximizing the profits. Or is this a way to save energy/the environment? If so, I'll have to adjust!

What I love so much about travel is that it allows me these moments of contemplation. We've been doing road trips these past ten years - I forgot about the discoveries found up in the air!

When we land, we'll be immersed in a world of otherness. Everywhere I turn will be a new sound, an unexpected sight. This trip will jumpstart my creativity for months to come. Just imagine - BUDAPEST!!! I wrote Jane Simon, my father's friend whose husband is from Hungary. Just think, after all these years, I'll be able to connect an understanding to the memories of what I've heard or read. And to think - traveling with my brother and his wife - truly a trip and opportunity of a lifetime. Dianne and I celebrate fifty years together, and we prepare for her 80th year. Life is and has been good. So, a small Cabernet Sauvignon, a large roast beef, and we're on to the next chapter. To life!

By the way, lest you think I've forgotten my mother, just know this - she set the story in motion! She celebrated her 80th birthday with a trip to Turkey - and we went too! Two years later we joined Mom and Dad on a trip to Morocco! And many years ago, following a war that should not have been, she carried her two kids to Berlin, helping her husband rebuild the world, and pave the way for peace.

Enough already! So much I've left undone. So much more to see. Andiamo!

Viking Longships - from Modi to Skirnir

Already there have been a few changes on our tour: two excursions we signed up for were canceled (money returned), and for one we selected another option. But the most recent change was the change of boats! Originally scheduled to cruise on the Modi, we've been moved to the Skirnir, where "everything will remain the same" - the room, the cost, the layout. C'est la vie! So, here's a video we watched giving a tour of the longships. Can't wait!!

Day 00 - to Budapest!

Today we finish our final packing and last minute arrangements ("Did you pack the...?", "Where's the...?", "What about...?") - but brother and wife are already there! In BUDAPEST!! So, what's it like? Well, here's how Viking looks at it:

Blogging by email

This is a test post, to see if I can create a blog post just by sending an email. If it works, we can easily add updates as we travel - once we figure out the cost and connections needed for access in Europe! We're researching that today, and have reached out to Judy, our favorite "cruise travel expert". And if you have suggestions, please send them our way - ASAP!

Website is READY!!

The format of the Europe 2023 website for our "Grand European Cruise" with Viking has been finalized and finally uploaded! What a struggle this has been! I had to learn all over again how to work with Dreamweaver templates, and undo much of the damage I had done. Then I had to re-awaken my HTML and CSS learnings, and add some to them, to make subtle changes that I deemed necessary. Finally, I had to figure out how to connect with our website, whose hosting ownership has changed hands 4 times since we first started creating websites. How long has it been? Anyway, a solid hour with a lady in India finally got me connected. Then once again there were a few more errors, but finally at 11 pm on 7/3/23 I can say - it's done! So, please take a look. Hopefully we'll add to this site either during or after our cruise is done - with photos, and stories, and maybe even some video. What currently exists is all the publicity about the tour, and results of research in preparation for the tour. There are still a few bugs, like a calendar that doesn't work - but, the automatic time clock does! Go to the Calendar tab at the top, then scroll down the page to see that our cruise begins in 12 days and 15 hours. HOORAY! Now, it's time to "practice pack"!!
